Rihanna announced that during a Loud Tour concert on August 5, 2011 at Kensington Oval, her performance of "Cheers (Drink to That)" would be filmed and used for the single's music video. She later announced that the video would feature footage of her returning to her home and scenes with other performances of the song at some stops on her North American tour. Through her Twitter account, Rihanna informed fans that the preview would take place the following day, August 25, 2011.

The light earthquake that hit New York postponed the release to the following day, August 26, 2011, on singer's VEVO page. A very short fifteen-second preview of the video surfaced online the day before the video's premiere which evoked a scene in which Rihanna puts on makeup before the concert.

The video opens with Rihanna's fans screaming her name before she begins her concert, while the pop star puts the finishing touches on her makeup and dresses up her costumes. A firework explodes in the air.

In the video, Rihanna alternates her signature red hair with her natural brown hair. The video shows the singer in various environments, including a stage, during a concert, and on a plane. Some of the singer's fans are also filmed in the video. Rihanna is also filmed backstage at a concert, in a van and in a swimming pool. Avril Lavigne, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Cee Lo Green make cameos in the video.
